The 15-year-old boy, who smelled strongly of marijuana, was arrested at Williamsport Area High School after school staff found the drugs and firearm, the Williamsport Bureau of Police said.
School staff noticed the smell of marijuana on the boy and escorted him to the principal's office where his backpack was searched, according to police. When the drugs and gun were found, the student was immediately detained and taken into custody.
The Williamsport Area School District acknowledged the incident the same day in a Facebook post, saying that the search was conducted based on a reasonable suspicion of drug possession. No threats were made and the gun was never displayed, the school said.
As a precautionary measure, the school district said that a visible police presence will be increased for the next several days.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and police ask that anyone with information contact Officer Trafford at ttrafford@cityofwilliamsport.org.
